My Crazy Beautiful World by Jacqueline Woodson

JackieWoodson74703-7x5

Jacqueline Woodson is an award-winning author of young adults book .

She specially likes the themes of the family and the childhood . Her first book was about her family story but she generalized her stories to the African American families for example . One of the most important reason of her implication in the world of litterature is because she wants to write books which speaks about the friendship and other themes about the understanding of oneself .

I wanted to write about friendship and all of these things that I felt like were missing in a lot of the books that I read as a child" J.Woodson.

Now I am in junior year of high school in literature . And I chose the option " English Literature " , we studied her story called " My Crazy Beautiful World".     The themes that are present in this book are the themes of the religion , freedom , insecurity and childhood . The narrator is Angela a 16 years old girls who tell us about when she was 12 . She feels different , she doesn't like her physical aspect , she compare herself to her best friend Maria who is more beautiful . She sometimes feel less intelligent than her older sister Dana who study a lot . Jacqueline Woodson sometimes speak through Angela , particulary when she speak about her grandmother who play an important role in the story . There is a beautiful complicity between Angela and her grandmother . Angela doesn't practice the same religion than her classmates and her grandmother represent the main actor of the theme of the religion because she is inflexible with it . One of the character who represent a theme is maybe Maria , her bestfriend , with whom she has nothing in common , Maria represent the freedom , the freedom to go everywhere she want and to do everything she want , some rights that Angela doesn't have .

This story is a good testimony about Jacqueline's childhood that makes reference at the African American history . I wasn't fascinated by this story but I tried to get involved and that is what I was able to hold captial concerning this work . I recommend this book because it is really easy to read and the story can speak to a lot of people .
